Fire Safety Services
In October 2006, fire safety law changed. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) shifted the balance of responsibility for fire safety away from fire and rescue authorities and more towards the 'responsible person' for the premises. The 'responsible person' may be the employer, the person who has control of the premises, or the owner depending on the circumstances. In the case of multi-occupancy buildings, one person may be responsible for the common parts (including escape routes/corridors) and others for each individual business within those premises.
It is no longer acceptable to simply think that if there is a fire at your premises, the fire service will come along and rescue people and put the fire out. You now need to consider how you will manage these aspects. Like health and safety law, this starts by undertaking a fire risk assessment.
Duties under the RRO include:
- take general fire precautions
- carry out a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment
- implement, monitor and review fire safety arrangements
- ensure the provision of appropriate fire fighting equipment, fire detectors and alarms
- keep emergency exits and routes clear at all times
- maintain facilities and equipment provided for fire safety
- provide employees with adequate fire safety training
- co-operate with other responsible persons on shared premises and co-ordinate fire safety measures with them
Consultancy
I offer both one-off consultancy or can work with your business on a retainer basis. During a consultancy contract, Sah Sen Consulting can either act as your 'competent person' (health and safety law requires that you have one or more competent persons to assist in health and safety management) or assist your own health and safety personnel to develop appropriate and effective health, safety and fire systems.
What if you are not sure if you need a consultancy contract, or how long it needs to be? I wouldn't expect you to guess what you need. If you are not sure, I can visit and complete an initial audit and give you an honest report on what you're doing well and where you need to make improvements. If you would like me to help make the improvements, we will draw up a plan together, which will form the basis of your consultancy contract. If you go ahead with the contract, the fee for the compliance audit will be deducted from your consultancy contract fee.
The exact details of what will be included in a consultancy contract depend on your individual needs but would typically include elements such as risk assessment, policy development, audits, and training.
